$200 Million Sony Deal Could Lead to Michael Jackson Games

According to a recent report from The Independent (via CVG), Sony has inked an agreement with Michael Jackson’s family for the rights to release up to 10 brand new Michael Jackson albums, DVDs, and videogames between now and 2017. The $200 million contract makes this the most expensive record deal with a solo artist in music history, trumping even Jay-Z’s 10-year, $150 million contract from 2008.
Demand for Jackson-related music, movies, and merchandise soared following the performer’s death back in June of last year. Since then, Sony’s moved over 31 million Michael Jackson albums in just nine months, and they’ve raked in a cool $260 million at the box office from Sony-owned Columbia Pictures’ This is It documentary — which, you may or may not recall, has its own PlayStation 3 bundle in Japan.
Previous rumors suggested that a game starring the late Michael Jackson was already under development well before the King of Pop’s unexpected death, but it seemed uncertain if the project would ever see the light of day. Now we can rest assured that Sony will at least attempt to put out some form of Jackson videogame — a PlayStation Move-enhanced successor to Moonwalker, perhaps? We’ll fill you in as soon as Sony makes any official announcements.
